Automatic for Brand New Drivers
Cars with automatic transmissions do not require you to change gears while driving forward and have only two pedals (brake and accelerator). They are simpler to operate than manual vehicles but still require careful attention to key components. One advantage of learning in an automatic is that it gives you more time to concentrate on your immediate surroundings. Our patient instructors will teach you all you need to know to operate an automatic car safely.
Manual
As the name suggests, manual cars require you to change gears manually via a gearstick. There is also an extra pedal called the “clutch” that needs to be pressed when changing the gears. Because manual vehicles have an added level of complexity, learning in them can contribute towards you gaining a full driving licence (rather than a limited auto licence). This will give you the ability to operate a much greater range of vehicles in the future.

FAQ
What’s the difference between learning in a manual vs automatic car?
Manual cars require the driver to shift gears using a clutch and gearstick, which can take time to master but offers more driving flexibility. Automatic cars handle gear changes for you, making them simpler to drive—especially for beginners. Many learners find automatics easier to start with, especially in stop-start traffic. However, getting your licence in a manual means you can legally drive both types of vehicles. The choice often comes down to your confidence, future driving plans and personal preference.
How long does it usually take to get ready for a driving test?
Everyone learns at a different pace, so there’s no set number of lessons needed to become test-ready. Some learners feel confident after 10–15 hours, while others may need 30 hours or more to build their skills. Your previous driving experience, comfort on the road and how often you practise all affect your progress. Consistent lessons with structured feedback can help you improve faster. Mock tests or pre-test assessments are also a great way to track your readiness.
Can driving lessons count toward logbook hours for learner drivers?
Yes — if you're under 25 and learning with a qualified driving instructor, each one-hour lesson can count as three logbook hours. This bonus only applies to the first 10 hours of professional instruction, giving you up to 30 hours in your logbook. After that, additional lessons are still counted hour-for-hour. This incentive is designed to encourage safer learning with trained instructors. It’s important to record each lesson correctly using your logbook or the official app.
